June 13
Hawaii Island Seed Exchange
Time: 8:30 am – 4 pm
Location: Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Gardens in Captain Cook
An annual event, this year’s Seed Exchange will be held at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook. The event is an opportunity for residents, home gardeners and farmers to exchange seeds they have harvested from fruits and vegetables with other residents, in order to perpetuate, improve and keep viable local, open-pollinated seeds and crops and to ensure a wide variety of foods that make up Big Island food stock. The Seed Exchange event offers opportunities to discuss “how to” with people who are already growing their own food as well as receive free seeds, roots or cuttings from local gardeners. The overall objective of the exchange is to encourage residents to grow more food and thus be more sustainable. The theme of the 2009 Seed Exchange is “The Moon and Agriculture,” honoring the Hawaiian moon goddess Hina and with agricultural wisdom, story-telling and connections between the moon, planting and harvesting. There will also be a special program for Hawaii Island School Gardens students, with overnight camping and dinner on Friday, June 12. The event is supported by the Bishop Museum Greenwell Gardens staff as well as by a grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation and Hawaii People's Fund.
