Introduction to Permaculture Class & Sustainable Farm Tour
Time: 10 am – 3 pm
Location: Waiaha Farm in Kona
In recent years, communities have become more aware of how crucial it is to grow something in their backyard. The Big Island imports 85%-90% of its food and is vulnerable to global fluctuations in fuel costs, weather patterns and market stability. Permaculture is an old and new type of agriculture especially functional on an island like Hawaii where land is limited. This event will teach an introductory class on the practical and sustainable approach to permaculture in Hawaii and a farm tour to see how these systems are directly applied to the land. Instructors will be giving an overview of the whole systems model that balances the natural processes with the human lifestyle. Systems include land restoration, organic gardening, animal husbandry, agroforestry, and resource management. The event will take place at Waiaha Farm in Kona, an historic 100-acre farm adjacent to the Waiaha stream between Mamalahoa and Queen Kaahumanu Highways. Space is limited; reserve by calling 854-0171 or email solomonsspace@gmail.com. Cost: $25 for morning instruction and tour and a $15 donation for lunch (sourced from the farm). Please wear comfortable walking shoes for the farm tour. To read more about Waiaha Farm visit www.waiahafarm.com. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn a little about how to grow your own food on the Big Island!
